Time running out for Tigers

From the archive, first published Thursday 2nd Feb 2006.

Tenby 3 Johnston 2 TENBY continued their pull away from the relegation places with a vital win over basement boys Johnston.

The battling Tigers fought for all they were worth but they couldn't overturn a 3-1 half-time deficit.

The home side began the game well and rocked Johnston with two goals in a minute.

Mike Beynon opened the scoring just after the 10 minute mark.

Jack Christopher made good ground down the wing and his pin-point cross was volleyed sweetly beyond Tigers' keeper Jim Payne.

Almost straight from the re-start Tenby won the ball back and set off on the attack.

This time Perry Broadhurst provided the ammunition and Matthew Jones launched a powerful diving header to make it two.

And a third followed before the break to effectively kill off the visitors. Ben Brooks slid Beynon into space and the striker made no mistake with a measured finish.

Johnston did give themselves a lifeline before the break when Andrew Ablitt's effort took a big deflection and wrong-footed Tenby keeper Christian Phillips.

That gave Johnston some hope and a dramatic finish looked on the cards after an hour's play.

Tenby's defending let them down and Darren Skelhorne found the corner. But the home side shut up shop and Johnston suffered their 14th defeat in 16 outings.
