Swifts turn sights on cup glory

Narberth 0 Monkton Swifts 1 MONKTON Swifts turn their attention to West Wales cup glory this weekend after romping into an unstoppable 11 point lead in the league.

Benno Jones' men travel to Penlan hoping to make it into the quarter-finals of west Wales' premier cup competition.

And they go into cup action with a huge advantage over a chasing pack who have all stumbled in recent weeks.

Narberth put up stiff resistance but once the Swifts got the breakthrough there was only ever going to be one result.

Jones' side had much the better of the possession in a first-half that had plenty of perspiration but little inspiration.

Narberth keeper Huw Davies was tested only rarely as the Swifts front-line was starved of any real opportunities.

And the home side would have been well pleased to have gone into the break with the scores level.

But, with 15 minutes of the second period gone, the Swifts made what turned out to be the killer breakthrough.

Referee Steve Williams awarded a free-kick just outside the box and Lee Jones stepped forward.

He curled his effort fantastically around the wall and beyond the outstretched hand of Davies.

After that the champions controlled the game and Narberth never really looked like getting back into the game.

The Swifts' attentions are now focussed on the cup and they will be eyeing yet more silverware.
