A MILFORD Haven town councillor grappled with a policeman over an axe on New Year's Eve, a court heard this week.
Cllr Tom Sinclair is accused of causing harassment, alarm or distress by letting off flares on Hamilton Terrace and pushing a police officer in the chest at about midnight on New Year's Eve.
Cllr Sinclair has pleaded not guilty and a trial, in which he is being represented by his son Tom Sinclair Junior, began at Haverfordwest magistrates court yesterday (Wednesday).
The court was told how four police officers were driving down Hamilton Terrace when they saw what appeared to be a large fire. However, when they got closer they found the light was from a red hand flare.
PC Mark Guest said: "He was dancing about with a glass of champagne in one hand and waving a flare in the other."
DC Jeff Aston told the court an argument ensued after Sinclair was told he could not let off fireworks and when one officer noticed an axe on the floor and picked it up, Sinclair lunged at him and tried to take the axe back. The struggle lasted for a few seconds before Sinclair let go of the axe, the court heard.
Sinclair was warned he would be arrested if he didn't stop letting off fireworks. He replied: "Go on then f****** arrest me" and pushed the officer in the chest.
The trial continues.
