End of a long season for Sports

From the Milford Mercury, first published Thursday 21st Apr 2005.

Herbrandston 4 Saundersfoot Sports 1 IT'S been a tough old season for Saundersfoot Sports in the top flight of Pembrokeshire football.

A single draw from 26 games has seen the Sports plummet back into the second flight but they can take heart from the fact they battled to the very end.

Herbrandston were the latest team to inflict a comprehensive defeat on the visitors.

Two goals from Adrian Jenkins and a strike apiece from Clive Marshallsay and Matthew Price did the damage and wrapped up Herbrandston's season in some style.

Jenkins bagged the opener with the clock ticking past 20 minutes. He struck a stinging right foot shot past James Caine.

Caine has certainly been the busiest keeper in the league all year and just 10 minutes later he was picking the ball out of the net again.

Sports were unlucky to see an effort on goal bounce perfectly to Clive Marshallsay and he had the simple task of doubling Herbie's advantage. Sports, as they have done all year, continued to press and were awarded when referee Brian Hawkins awarded a penalty.

Andy Hughes fired home and it was 2-1 at the break.

It was just a brief respite, however, and Price restored his side's two goal lead with a clinical edge-of-the-box drive.

Jenkins lobbed Caine sweetly from 25 yards to make it four and Herbie finish the season in 10th place.

Sports, meanwhile, will be looking to regroup and enjoy their football in division two.
