Rugby: Nervy Scarlets in roller-coaster draw

From the Milford Mercury, first published Thursday 21st Apr 2005.

Penygroes 25 Pembroke 25 AFTER losing last week table toppers Pembroke could only manage a draw on Saturday at third place Penygroes.

The visitors were rocked at the start as the home side grabbed a try by second row Richard Morgan to go with a conversion and penalty from fly half Ceri Davies.

However, the Scarlets fought back to lead 13-10 at half time as Phil Williams landed a penalty and there were tries by full back Vyv Davies and winger Gareth Lewis.

In a roller-coaster game, Penygroes re-gained the lead with a converted try from flanker Nathan Hughes but Pembroke responded when Vyv Davies sliced through for his second try.

Penygroes came back with a second try for lock Morgan and a Davies penalty but the Scarlets held their nerve as `old head' hooker Neil Humphreys joined the fray as replacement and crashed over for a try.

Phil Williams knew the importance of the conversion and held his nerve, sending the ball sailing between the posts to secure a vital point.

Ossie Boswell's Scarlets are just one point ahead of New Dock Stars at the top of the finish as champions and gain promotion.

Pembroke: Vyv Davies; Johnny Williams; Huw Purser; Nicky James; Gareth Lewis; Phil Williams; Adrian Heath; Richard Morris (capt); Sean Beynon (Neil Humphreys); Richard Mason; Owain Johns; Dai Beynon; Sandy Allen; Steve Dyde (Robin Badham); Phil Greenwood.
