Power station plans unveiled: 2,000 megawatts and 800 jobs

LAST WEEK the people of Pembrokeshire got their chance to find out more about plans to build a 2,000 megawatt power station at West Pennar and create 800 jobs.

A public exhibition was held at Pembroke Town Hall last Friday and Saturday for people to see RWE npower's plans for the gas-fired plant which will produce enough electricity to supply two million homes.

Tony Thompson, project manager said: "We hope the exhibition will remove any uncertainties that the people of Pembroke and Pembrokeshire might have about our plans and to help them find out what we are doing and answer any questions.

"It has astounded me how favourable people seem to be for this project. We chose Pembroke because it is a great place for a power station and going by the response of the local people it was precisely the right decision."

About 800 jobs will be created during the four-year construction of the power station which will employ between 70 and 80 permanent staff.

South Pembrokeshire MP Nick Ainger said: "The core energy industries, including LNG and the two refineries, is not only going to provide long-term, well-paid jobs through direct labour but also, because of the number of plants, there are going to be long-term, secure jobs in maintenance and contracting jobs.

"For the first time, probably in at least 30 years, we can say to young people `there's a real future with well-paid, secure jobs in Pembrokeshire for you.' We have not been able to say that for decades."

Mayor of Pembroke, Cllr Pearl Llewellyn added: "Personally I'm delighted to see this coming because it means more work for the local community and it will bring some prosperity into the town."
