Ive stars as Carew canter

From the Milford Mercury, first published Friday 20th Jun 2003.

Carew (209 for 5 declared) beat Pembroke (96 all out) Umpires: Rob Bellerby and Alan Hansen Scorer: Kevin Jenkins (Pembroke)

Carew made ground at the top of the table as they easily accounted for a makeshift Pembroke side which is still short of key players but battling nonetheless under former Carew player Barry Evans.

The Villagers sped to 209 before declaring with four overs left, making sure that they had overs aplenty to bowl the opposition out, with Steve Ive showing what an asset he is with a superb seven-wicket haul.

Carew started like rockets as Ian Sefton and Nick Scourfield put on 65 for the first wicket from 11 overs, with Sefton having five fours in his 27 before he was first to go as Gwyn Griffiths struck three times in eight runs to shift Sefton, Simon Wood and Aled Davies, finishing with splendid figures of 3 for 22 in 12 overs.

But Scourfield found another willing ally in Phil Jones as they added a further 87 runs to help Carew towards such a big final tally, with Scourfield having nine fours in his excellent 68 and Jones lashing five boundaries and a six in his 42.

Then Tim Hicks and Barry Ansell chipped in 46 runs in an unbroken stand before skipper Darren Thomas decided enough was enough.

Ive then took over as he shifted Paul White, Craig Nutty and William Davies in the first of two spells, and after taking the enforced rest demanded of young fast bowlers under he new rules, returned to wipe out the Pembroke tail with another four scalps as he found pace aplenty on a good track.

Barry Evans managed double figures as he tried hard to hold the innings together and Hugh Davies led the Pembroke batting from his No 6 berth with six fours in an unbeaten 39 - but Carew spinner John Canton showed his worth to the team by claiming two wickets alongside Rob Scourfield, who also picked up 1 for 7 as Pembroke finished up 113 runs behind and still seeking that elusive first victory.
